Yes, this game is not even out yet but there are high hopes for Next Car Game by BugBear Entertainment. Bugbear Entertainment is an award-winning, leading independent game developer. Makers of FlatOut series, Sega Rally PSP, Ridge Racer Unbounded. If you don’t know what Next Car Game is about then let me tell you. Next Car Game is a new demolition derby themed racing game with soft-body damage modeling, sophisticated driving dynamics and in-depth vehicle upgrading, featuring both demolition derbies and more traditional track races. They have already racked up $1 million in sales, just one week after it launched in Steam Early Access. There is something about this game. I think I know: INSANITY.
BugBear pitched the game to many publishers and was turned away after the publishers explained that there’s no market for a racer focused on crashing and destruction (sidebar: ARE YOU INSANE?!). Bugbear then took the game to Kickstarter, where it failed to reach its goal of $350,000. The developer then asked for support through the project’s website, where backers contributed more than $490,000, well clear of its original crowdfunding goal. Add in $1 million dollars in sales and you got yourself a game!
Flashing back to my childhood this game brings me back to the days with my brother. We would set up Hot Wheels and one track. Each of us would take a car and flick it across the track, destroying the car in the process. Next Car Game also reminds me of the original Driver. You need this type of game. A racing game where physics is apart of the gameplay. You see real damage. As you race in these track races cars fly off the road. I believe the beginning of the race is the best part. All the cars have to merge in, where the craziness ensues. You can also play in these demolition derbies. Where you can takedown other cars. What else would you do?
There is one other mode. It is the Technology Sneak Peek. It is playground scene that BugBear used internally to test various features like car damage and environment destruction. Well by pre-ordering the game or signing up for their newsletter you get this. This where things get fun. Essentially you have this giant playground to do whatever you want. This includes 24 car demo derby battles, physics cannon with missiles, new destructive machinery, more spectacular stunts and a ton of stuff to blow up! I just love the giant hammer. It just sits there, hammering its life away. All kinds of crazy stuff to do. Items have weight. You just can run over certain items. This just can’t be a tech demo. THIS NEED TO BE IN THE GAME. You can also shoot items. From a box to my favorite, a giant bowling ball. The only thing I would like BugBear to do is have user created races or some type of creator Hot Wheels type thing, where one prop leads to another and it goes on and on. Otherwise, I love it!
I know it is unfair to compare this game to Forza or Gran Turismo. They both don’t do anything like this but they are not trying to do this, Next Car Game is. Just going up a ramp is beautiful. Vehicle behavior is just fantastic, impacts are accuracy, the laws of physics are outstanding, no object passes through another. AI is smart and unpredictable, which is hard to do in other games. Engine sounds are amazingly good. I can’t wait for this game to come out!
