I have been waiting at least 8 months for this game. I could have gotten it when it had released over a year ago on PC. I believe that it was worth the wait. This is my first review, so bear with me if it is too long or not answer any questions you have.
The design of the Terraria is in the 2D 8 bit style. This would be comparable to game such as Castlevania or Spelunky. In my first playthrough, I did not notice that the background was moving apart from the sun and the moon. The clouds were moving! It was so cool. There are probably many different game that do this but I was still excited. The design of the game also help the game move along. The Sun and the Moon rises and sets. Day and night come around with it variety of villains and monsters. All the different types of blocks have their own style and colors. Dirt blocks are dirt color and stone blocks are a gray color. Some blocks sparkle like the copper block, which if there is enough light they will show you where they are. You can customize your sprite, by picking hair, skin, eye color and also you can pick the color of your shirt, pants, and shoes. One more thing, You can choose the world size. There is small, medium, and large. I chose the small. That is quite large.
Gameplay is amazing. As Terraria says “Dig, Fight, Explore, Build! Terraria gives you the tools to unleash your imagination: Explore a huge modifiable world with your friends. What will your story be?”. It has that Minecraft feel. With this game and Minecraft you have to carve out the ground around you looking for items and blocks. You need to use your axe and pickax right away! Don’t wait! Like Minecraft there is a night and day cycle. At night you have zombies and demon eyes after you. After you have all your materials, make a simple structure. They say 6 blocks high and 10 blocks across. DO THIS! Then create a workbench to make the door and the background walls(this is so any type of enemy does not respawn in your house). I found a cave and put a door on it. That is my house. I added all on to this main structure. When I am done with my house, it is going to look like a multi-roomed turtle shell. That first structure will not look pretty, but it will do for the night. That is all you want. When you first play you will meet your guide Jason. He will give you tips in this world of Terraria. For me, his life was short. That first night he died by zombie. If I would have built a house and added a chair and table he would be alive. I do have a bunny! If you have not played this game on PC then you NEED to play the tutorial. I would suggest this anyway if you did play this on PC. You can try to do this without the tutorial like I did but then you are stuck in a hole at the bottom of a sea. This was literally me. I dug my self in a hole and could not get out. Use the wooden supports! The controls are fine. You can quick connect things on your d-pad. You can switch between the two modes at the click of a thumbstick. The automatic digging targets and is great for just pointing the right stick in a set direction and then chewing through the ground with relative ease, while manual digging works best when you’re trying to build things or gather specific pockets of ore. You can keep lots of items in your inventory.
After only a few hours of playing I am addicted. There is a multiplayer mode to this game that I have not tried out. From what I can gleam, you can have up to 4 players locally and 8 online. There is also a leaderboard, for you people who what to spend day after day to top that thing.
I would give this a 8.7 out of 10. Like I said play the tutorial. I can’t stress that enough. It is an amazing game! I would like a button for a map. If there is a map on this I would like to see it. Plus, I would like to see it for the vita. It is available for the PS3(PSN) for 14.99, Xbox(XPLA) for 1200 Microsoft Points and coming soon to the European PSN. If you have played the game and have any questions, talk to me! I am not an expert but I can help! How good was this review? Answer in the comments below.
